Ahmad Musa Jabril: Radical U.S. Preacher Beyond FBI’s Reach?
FBI Launch Probe Into Dearborn Muslim Hate Preacher Over Claims
He Radicalized London Bridge Killer
How is this man still walking free to preach hate when even Muslims find him offensive? Why hasn’t his internet access been shut down and videos completely deleted?
Ahmad Musa Jibril is a long-time Islamic preacher who Khuram Butt, one of the three London killers is reported to have watched on the internet.
Counter Extremism Project notes:
He has reportedly influenced Westerners to fight in the Syrian conflict. From his home in Michigan, Jibril produces Internet lectures that advocate a Salafist version of Islam that praises jihad, although he doesn’t specifically call upon his followers to join jihadi groups.* A 2014 report by the International Centre for the Study of Radicalization (ICSR) found that Jibril “adopts the role of a cheerleader: supporting the principles of armed opposition to Assad.”
In April 2014, ICSR researchers found that 60 percent of foreign fighters in Syria followed Jibril on Twitter.* Jibril has directly praised Syrian rebels, comparing them to those fighting on behalf of Islam in the religion’s early days. Jibril’s followers have primarily joined al-Qaeda-affiliated groups, but some have joined ISIS as well.* Jibril has been in direct contact with several foreign fighters and families of deceased fighters.* Jibril “bridges the gap” for Westerners who may not understand Arabic, according to Shiraz Maher, one of the study’s co-authors.* Jibril “provides the political and theological justification” and “comfort” to jihadists, according to ICSR director Peter Neumann.
Jibril’s Twitter account, @ahmadmusajibril, has more than more than 43,000 followers.* His Facebook page, under the name Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril, has more than 240,000 likes, although he has not updated it since July 2014.* A second Facebook page called “Gems of shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril” is updated more regularly with Jibril’s lectures and videos. The page has more than 15,000 followers.
According to records, Jibril (also known as Abu Khaled) was born in 1972 in Dearborn, Michigan of Palestinian parents. As a child Jibril lived for some time in Medina, Saudi Arabia where his father was enrolled in the Islamic University of Madinah. Jibril then returned to the U.S. where he completed his high school education in 1989. He later returned to Medina to study at the Islamic University of Madinah, receiving a degree in sharia. He subsequently received from a JD from a Michigan law school. He has been married reportedly twice. He divorced the first wife who has been raising her children but acknowledges he did beat her. His second wife is seldom been seen in public and wears tradition garb.
In 2004, Jibril and his father were together tried for a total of 42 criminal charges, of the crimes; conspiracy, bank fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, failure to file income tax returns and felon-in-possession of firearms and ammunition. Jibril was convicted and sentenced for these crimes, to six and one half years in a high-security prison, and was subsequently imprisoned at Terre Haute Federal Correctional Complex, from where he was released sometime during 2012. They were supposed to make restitution payments after release but Jibril has barely made any.
In the mid to late 1990s, Jibril created the website AlSalafyoon.com which contained videos of Islamic preachers described by US prosecutors as “a library of fanatically anti-American sermons” in which he “encouraged his students to spread Islam by the sword, to wage a holy war and to hate and kill non-Muslims”. The website ceased operations following his arrest and incarceration in 2003-4.
It was alleged that under the alias Thomas Saad, a mere day after the 1995 Riyadh Bombing that he sent a fax to CNN saying that its purpose was to “kick the Jews and Christians out of the Arabian Peninsula” as commanded by Muhammad. It closed, “There will be a series of bombings that will follow no matter how many lives of ours are taken or how many bodies are in prison. This is the precise reason why we chose the building we chose.” However, the government found no evidence that Jibril was connected to the actual bombing beyond sending a fax, and did not prosecute him, though it later made reference to the fax in a 2005 supplemental sentencing memorandum for the 2003-5 criminal trial.
Within days following his 2012 release from prison, he began posting his views online, producing YouTube videos and operating on social media. He remains on the FBI watch list. While currently he has not accessed his main Facebook or You Tube accounts, it is certainly reasonable that he does continue posting especially after the London extremist said he was listening often to his posts. So why has the intelligence gathering groups not searched out every instance and deleted them from online?
The federal government got a green light to use the “actions necessary” to collect a quarter of a million dollars in restitution owed by Jibril according to Dearborn Patch. He apparently was popular with the Islamic militants who beheaded U.S. journalist James Foley and was banned from local mosques because of his fiery rhetoric.
A 2014 study by British researchers said Ahmad Musa Jibril is one of two U.S. Muslim religious leaders greatly influencing ISIS and other radical Islamic groups.
Closer to home, Jibril was reported to be an influence for terrorists in the United States as early as fall 2014, in which there was a sharia-inspired beheading at a Oklahoma meatpacking plant, and indictment on charges of attempted murder and trying to fund ISIS of Yemeni immigrant pizza-shop manager Mufid Elfgeeh. Yet for all his influence Jibril has never been charged or served time for influencing any of these horrific acts carried out by people who follow him on social media.
After conducting a review in June 2017 following the London Bridge massacre, YouTube refused to remove Jibril’s videos, which had been viewed more than 1.5 million times as of that date, as they did not violate YouTube’s guidelines on the advocacy of violence. YouTube has stated that most of Jibril’s videos are religious sermons on varied subjects such as interpretation of the Quran, Islamic behavior, fasting, and western medicine. On the 18th of June 2017, responding to criticism, YouTube announced a new policy under which extremist videos, such as Jibril’s, while not removed from the site would be difficult to find, with warning labels, and without user endorsements, comments, nor advertising.
Ahmad Musa Jabril isn’t the only known radical imam in the United States or around the world preaching sermons of hate that end up radicalizing people. As the video above notes even some other imams especially of different sects have real problems with his extremism in the US. While I hesitate to paint every imam with the same brush because like every religion there are better or worse who lead. Other imams like Farrakhan, however, are equally dangerous for the same reasons. Some are simply more fiery and all are careful about just how far they go. Yet they won’t ever be among the ones tried and sentenced if their followers do follow their teachings unless something changes.
That simply isn’t acceptable. Any like this imam who can be shown to actively have influenced radical actions and radicalization of many jihadists across the world should not have the right to walk, post, talk, sermonize or in any way interact ever again with their followers. The case needs to be nearly as airtight as the man above but HE like every radical imam should have to face the same fate as those that have carried out the terrorist attacks. Maybe each of them should wear a suicide vest along with a GPS implant and be dumped in the middle of the hottest desert with no food or water. Perhaps those virgins they go on about would supply all their needs.
Dearborn Patch ran an article in August 2014 entitled “Dearborn No. 2 on Government List of Cities with Suspected Terrorist Ties.” Council on American-Islamic Relations executive director quickly commented that the report has “chilling effect” and “in no way jibes with … reality.” Truth hurts yet Dearborn has not cleaned up their act and if anything appears to have gotten worse.
“Dearborn is No. 2 on the government’s list of U.S. cities with the highest number of residents with suspected terrorist ties, according to classified government documents posted by The Intercept, an online magazine. The secret documents from the National Counterterrorism’s Center Directorate of Terrorist Identities lists New York City, a city of 8 million, as the top U.S. city for residents believed to be linked to terrorist groups, The Detroit News reports.”
This is who Obama brought to prominence. They certainly didn’t spring up overnight as we can see from this imam but his protectiveness and acceptance have gone a very long way in making our country less secure and our people more open to attack. Our laws should protect freedom of speech and religion BUT not when those religions are in direct conflict with our constitution and laws NOR when the leaders encourage the slaughter and degradation of many simply because the people do not want to be a part of their religious teachings. That is one of several reasons that the United States was founded. Political correctness should not override common sense nor our laws.
