WASHINGTON — Protesters halted traffic on a major highway, set a car on fire, threw rocks at police and swarmed streets a few blocks from the White House as Donald Trump’s supporters celebrated his presidential inauguration on Friday.

A total of 217 people were arrested after violence broke out just before Trump was to be sworn in as the 45th president of the United States. They were charged with rioting and will appear in court Saturday morning, said Interim D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham.

“We welcome visitors to our city. But we will not tolerate the destruction of our neighborhoods and we absolutely will not tolerate violence against our police officers,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said in an evening press briefing.

Newsham said the protesters threw rocks and bricks at police. Six D.C. police officers were injured during the altercations, including three who suffered minor head injuries from flying objects.

A group of about 400 to 500 people descended around Franklin Square about 10:30 a.m. Many of the protesters were armed with crowbars and hammers, which they used to break store windows and damage vehicles. They set several small fires and scuffled with police as they were arrested, Newsham said.

He called it a coordinated attack by an organized group from outside D.C.

“We had thousands of people that came to Washington D.C. to peacefully demonstrate. Unfortunately we had a small group that wanted to disrupt the inauguration,” Newsham said. “We have significant damage in a number of blocks in our city.”

An older man was taken away in an ambulance with a head injury, Newsham said.

“Some protesters started picking (concrete) up and started throwing it,” one eyewitness told WTOP.

“This is dumb. It really is. What did they accomplish?” said another. “Me, you — anyone could have been sitting there. … In America, this type of action doesn’t help.”

The demonstrations and tension continued through Trump’s inaugural luncheon and as he paraded down Pennsylvania Avenue with his wife Melania and son Barron.

Demonstrators halted westbound traffic on the Southeast Southwest Freeway for 30 minutes as they marched along the highway starting about 1 p.m. They carried signs that said “No hope” and “Stop fascism.”

Their route took them from near the 11th Street Bridge to the 12th Street Expressway to access Independence Avenue. The freeway was one of the few main roads that remained open during the inaugural events

But the epicenter of the tension was the Franklin Square area where a crowd of protesters continued to test riot police throughout the afternoon. Police formed a blockade across the intersection of L and 12th streets and fired off repeated rounds of pepper spray in an effort to disperse the volatile crowd.

Several groups of protesters combined in the area of the square and at first sought the release of those who had been arrested. But the tension escalated as protesters set trash on fire, and other protesters began to pry up bricks from a median. Protesters broke out the windows of a stretch limo parked on K Street, posed for photos amid the damage and later set the limo on fire.

At one point, scores of protesters armed with Black Lives Matter signs and anti-Trump posters moved down 12th Street and Massachusetts Avenue, swarming around cars caught in the unexpected melee.

A few blocks away, speakers addressed a more relaxed, and peaceful crowd at a McPherson Square opposition rally. Filmmaker Michael Moore was among those who spoke.

At its height, thousands packed into the square as National Guard troops and police stood watch.

Two groups obtained permits for marches and protests that involved the square.

The group DisruptJ20 had planned to protest at Columbus Circle outside of Union Station and then march to McPherson Square. Occupy Inauguration planned to rally at Meridian Hill Park before marching down to join up with the DisruptJ20 group. Black Lives Matter and other groups also took part.

WTOP’s Megan Cloherty, Dave Dildine, Kate Ryan, Mike Murillo, Dennis Foley, Neal Augenstein and Rick Massimo contributed to this report.

Quick observation here — while faces were covered for the most part, the ones visible in this clip did not appear to be Blacks. However, given the last statement in red, this was a three-pronged attack that SHOULD have been halted the day those videoes about the DisruptJ20 and other online information surfaced. F’k this playing nice.   If it moves, quacks and hisses like an extinct dodo bird, then CAGE their arses especially if there is advanced warning.

I hope everyone of these receive jail time. Especially those that burned the limousine and broke the windows.  What they forgot is there are many pictures of this event so no one can hopefully squirm out of this.

I also want to see exactly how many were part of the DisruptJ20 group. No one can say at the FBI and other places that they had no early warning thanks to the investigative reports done.  EVERY member of that organization deserves prison time for rioting and acts of treason. In addition Michael Moore (even if he was in one of the more peaceful marches) and everyone including the UN, Soros, and any so-called “foundations” that funded these asshats should also have to stand trial and pay for all the damage done. Not one single donor or rioter should escape justice in every city where rioting occurs.

This was NOT about fear but insurrection.

I am SO sick of this. I blame Obama, the Democrats in Congress, parents that knew what their kids were doing, and every stupid idiot out there that believes fear, chaos, and destruction is better than commonsense and listening before acting.

    Where were the bikers??

    • Uriel says:

I don’t know Robert. Not being familiar with D.C. Perhaps they were gathered close in and restricted from participating with all the Enforcement people there. In one video it showed them talking about a park and festivities they were involved in there. I can’t imagine many being far from their bikes. Like the peaceful protestors perhaps they were only allowed a specific location as a condition of their permit.

  2. Shar says:

    Robert,

I wondered that myself. No report of them anywhere. Wonder who is paying for damage and legal fees for these thugs. Want to bet its mommy and daddy.

    • Navyvet says:

NFW. Not mommy and daddy. You and me among others, but sureasell not them. Some scumbag judge (redundancy) will give them a tap on the wrist, tell them to not do it again and let them go. After they get out they will laugh at what a dumbass the judge is…and be right.

  3. Dynalady says:

Uriel–right on! I am so sick of these criminals, thugs, arsonists, & vandals being called ‘protesters.’ Protesters stand with signs & chant slogans. Violent organized criminals throw concrete at police & injure them by hitting them in the head. Limousines do not set fire to themselves–nor, I doubt, can a car fire be set with just a cigarette lighter. Some arsonist has to plan & bring the stuff needed to get a sustained fire going. People do not cover their faces unless they are planning to do wrong. We need reporting on what happens to these arsonists, batterers, & vandals beyond mere arrest. I want them to go to prison. I also want to see national news footage of democrats denouncing this organized crime bc none of them has ever breathed one word of disapproval. Casual liberals be warned–the Democrat party has given a welcoming, supportive home to these organized felons. Honest people despise gratuitous violence & anarchy. Time for every Dem & Rino to be outed as to which side they are on-peaceful law & order or organized crime!

    • Uriel says:

Welcome to Hardnox Dynalady! Take a bow! Great and spot on rant! I couldn’t agree more instead of “lock her up”. I want to hear the sound of a gavel and judge calling out “guilty as charged, sentencing of five years in prison and payment of xxx,000 in fines!”

  4. Hardnox says:

I watched this idiocy yesterday and last night since it’s on my local news. Fortunately, I’m 100 miles away.

It is stunning how the left has managed to stir up the lemmings and how easily they are controlled… and yet the wizards of smart wonder why Trump got elected.

    • Uriel says:

It’s easy to obtain their focus – wave a few bags of “stuff”, wafting smells of zombie weeds, and these idiots with few brain cells will follow like starved hounds. They are thrill seekers and junkies who get off on the “danger of destruction”.

  5. malenurseken says:

Yes those violent rioting protestors act more like iris terrorists than American citizens. Maybe they should all be shipped to Iran or Afghanistan in desert someplace. To fend for themselves

    • Uriel says:

Lol. That would be interesting especially if the US, Israel and any nations pushing democracy stood along the borders to keep them in there.

      • Uriel says:

There is going to come a time very soon when all countries have to decide who they align with. I feel like we are fighting not just for our country but to give heart to those around the world. I don’t know if Trump can get a grip but we have to move out of denial and really take off the rose-tinted glasses.

  6. malenurseken says:

Well there is coming a time when we all personally have to decide who to side with. Its in bible. Antichrist or real Christ. Ever heard of 666? Mark of beast? I believe were very near that time in earths trial.

  7. malenurseken says:

Ill not align with any country. Its gonna be rougher times than at any point ever!

    • Uriel says:

I really do agree in many respects Malenurse. If you are a true believer in the Bible, there is only one to “align” with. But that is more a discussion for a different kind of site. I do believe God intervenes when many pray and this was such a time.

  8. Blessed B. says:

Perhaps a new Law should be brought in…. if you are a protester and you are wearing a mask or bandana to cover your face….the police get to shoot you in the face. Call it “Shoot the Mask” Law…..

Wanna see how many, after the first couple dozen go down, will be wearing masks to demonstrate and to cause violence and destruction?

We had these thugs in Canada during the G8 conference…. not many were actually from Canada, it was found.

These thug protesters need to be taught a lesson or two….don’t molly coddle them…make them pay for the damages by working in Prison. When they have paid off their debt for the damages done…..they will get out.

    • Uriel says:

You are definitely a “tough love” lady. I’m right there with you. Any caught with face coverings should be stopped and arrested on sight. They are most often ones starting crap and probably involved in illegal activities. If peaceful why do they need anonymity?

  9. Terry says:

Looks like some of the arrested snowflakes may have to face some consequences. I just posted this :

    http://hardnoxandfriends.com/2017/01/23/bad-news-for-the-snowflakes/

    • This would be a great time to be called up for jury duty, eh?

    • Uriel says:

Yep. Exactly. Actions especially illegal actions do have consequences. It’s past time snowflakes learn that lesson. Meltdowns don’t bring sympathy out in me and Soro’s money buys nothing behind bars. Most of these snowflakes are privileged and as you can see most being pictured are white. Somewhere in my mind is the laughing jeers of Blacks who have been sentenced for less. I stand with them on this. These young people have been played for fools. Their parents are as much to blame as the people who hired and fired up these kids.
