Washington (CNN)House Democrats decided Tuesday to delay their leadership elections until after Thanksgiving — a move that will give reeling Democrats time to nurse their wounds and could spell trouble for longtime leader Nancy Pelosi.
After a closed-door meeting, some of Pelosi’s supporters said it was time for some serious soul-searching in the Democratic Party.
“We just had a shellacking. We just got a shellacking last Tuesday. We got an unexpected defeat and we’ve got to recalibrate it and decide how we go forward,” said Rep. G.K. Butterfield, chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus and a Pelosi supporter. “It’s just like death. There are difference stages of grief you go through.”
The vote is now scheduled for November 30.
As she left the meeting Tuesday, Pelosi downplayed the delay, saying that it doesn’t mean “very much because we’ll be out for Thanksgiving. But we’ll have for the rest of this week to go over some issues.”
No formal challenger has surfaced to Pelosi, but Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan has emerged as the de facto leader of a younger group of House Democrats looking for new direction.
Ryan called Tuesday’s delay a “good first step” and said the Democrats need to start thinking about states in “flyover country” that they lost to Trump.
“We lost those voters and we’ve got to find a way to get them back in. And it starts with a message that resonates in the fly-over states,” Ryan said. “Who is the leader who can going into the Southern states? Who can going into the Midwestern states? That’s the question, that’s the discussion we need to have.”
On CNN’s “The Lead,” anchor Jim Sciutto pressed Ryan, “it sounds like it’s clear you’re not ruling out challenging Pelosi for the leadership.”
“I’m not, and I don’t think anyone else is. I think there are a lot of people having conversations right now,” Ryan confirmed.
First as a constitutional conservative who has listened over the years and watched Nancy Pelosi, this announcement could not make me happier. I have always had a problem with someone known over the years to have been a card-carrying Communist Party member in control of any phase of congressional functions. More than that the asinine public statements she has made at times have been shockers. There are many instances but in particular the one about “well, congress will simply have to pass the Obamacare bill in order to find out what is in it” was one of her all time worst.
Watching from the outside, if the Democrat Party is truly going to change and grow in a direction that the country sees as positive, why would they keep allowing the “old guard” to take leading roles in either house or senate? Pelosi cannot and will not change at this point in her life. I honestly do not think any of the old guard Democrats or Republicans should stay beyond this term. Why because they have been so out of touch with the people they are supposed to represent that they have become nearly obsolete.
Everyone wants to point fingers at others for the rise of Donald Trump on both sides of the aisle, but to me they are All equally to blame. From corruption to lobbying, from inactivity to blind obedience to Obama, Clintons and outside interests like the UN and Soros, these people have done more harm in the last twenty years than any president and cabinet in the last hundred years. They have spent money as if the printing press would never break, grown big government as if a top-heavy structure could not fall, made deals and traded tit-for-tat or pay-for-play as if they were actually working across a Monopoly board rather than being accountable to our citizens. They have failed repeatedly to remove those in office who have created or totally ignored the rules and law as if any means of success were acceptable rather than thinking of the welfare and good of the people first. They go into congress with often less than multi-millionaire status yet within ten years even with the low pay of their office suddenly have become some of the wealthiest members of the political elite.
Back to the Democrats though, having Muslim Brotherhood members in key congressional positions or socialists determined to seek their elitist agenda above the Democrat platform is absurd. How can the people who claim to be Democrats possibly strengthen and revive their party if they are determined to ignore the working class or continue with the status quo which obviously failed them?
I think the Republicans are also in shock for the same reasons. They underestimated or ignored the true will of those that they were supposed to be representing. They also need to revamp and rework the structure of the party. We are just as tired of having UNiparty and RINOS either leaning toward global agendas rather than the sovereignty of state or rolling over and arse kissing Democrat will on bills rather than standing up for the people who put them in office because they “told us they would bring change and stand up”.
Frankly I am totally unbiased – the government has become too top-heavy, bloated with power, war hungry, and spend crazy. Things like term limits and penalties for not being in session or actively voting on bills should be priority new rules and laws if needed. It starts the day each member reports to congress for all politicians. We the people must scrape the barrel, budget carefully, and punch in on time every day to provide a good days work for a good days pay. Congress should be no different.
I would love to see the members punch in to start the day, punch out at the end of the day if that is the only way to get their attention. Maybe along with that add a transparent expense report to websites and presented weekly to the department for approval (with a copy to state treasurers or something). Another idea to kick around, how about an interactive website to the state legislature of upcoming bills and the stance the state has on the vote or wording even prior to submission.
The slogan Donald Trump used of “Drain the Swamp” is to the point and explains perfectly what most of the constitutionalists, conservatives, and others should want to express to disbelieving sets of political parties and employees of the government–Get your acts together or suffer the consequences at election time or earlier if recall is needed.
