Navy Cruise Missile Strike Destroys Radar Sites in Yemen

A U.S. Navy ship launched cruise missiles and destroyed three radar sites from a rebel-controlled area in Yemen, the service announced late Wednesday.

The announcement came a day after a Navy ship was apparently targeted for a second time by missiles originating from the area.

In a statement, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said the radar sites struck were in territory controlled by Houthi rebels on Yemen’s Red Sea coast. They were hit early Wednesday morning, at roughly 4 a.m. local time, officials said.

“Initial assessments show the sites were destroyed,” Cook said in the statement.

A defense official told the attacks were conducted using sea-launched cruise missiles and originated from the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Nitze, but would not confirm the number of missiles fired, citing security reasons.

“This is a direct response to situations that threaten freedom of navigation,” Navy Lt. Ian McConaughey, a spokesman for U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, told “These strikes show our resolve against unprovoked hostility against the U.S. and are aimed at defending U.S. Navy assets.”

The original attacks appeared to target the Arleigh-Burke class destroyer USS Mason, which has been patrolling near the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, and the amphibious transport dock USS Ponce, also in the region.

The strikes were recommended by Defense Secretary Ash Carter and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford and authorized by President Barack Obama, Cook said in the statement.

“These limited self-defense strikes were conducted to protect our personnel, our ships and our freedom of navigation in this important maritime passageway,” Cook said. “The United States will respond to any further threat to our ships and commercial traffic, as appropriate, and will continue to maintain our freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, the Bab-el-Mandeb, and elsewhere around the world.”

Earlier Wednesday, a military official confirmed to The Associated Press that a second round of two missiles had been fired from rebel territory at the Mason. The ship used countermeasures, the officials said, and the missiles went harmlessly into the sea.

The first two missiles targeting the Mason and the Ponce were fired Sunday, originating from the same region on the coast of Yemen.

A defense official confirmed to that the Mason had used countermeasures, firing two Standard Missile-2s and a RIM-162 Evolved SeaSparrow Missile, and launching a Nulka missile decoy to lure the missiles away from the ship. It remains unclear whether these countermeasures were successfully employed against the missiles or whether the attack failed on its own.

A defense official told Wednesday’s successful attack on radar sites in Yemen was executed consistent with international law and was conducted independently of the Saudi-led coalition war on the rebels.

McConaughey told that the command will continue to maintain ships in the area.

“[NAVCENT] will not back down from its duty to ensure the free flow of commerce, freedom of access and security in this vital region with our allies and regional partners,” he said.

It remains unclear whether the U.S. will take further action in response to the attacks.

Yemeni forces have targeted and destroyed an Emirati military vessel in a rocket attack near the Red Sea port city of Mokha, al-Masirah TV says. The C-802 is the export upgraded version of the Chinese anti-ship missile YJ-8 (Chinese: 鹰击-8, literally “Eagle Strike”; NATO reporting name: CSS-N-8 Saccade).

US Navy ship targeted in missile attack in Yemen, Nafisa Latic brings more on this story.

From this report we can already see where this entire area is about to explode and our own forces are caught in the middle. The big question is – should they even be there? When is the US going to learn to stay out of petty wars until there is a clear, present danger, and a signed treaty or agreement which lays out specifics?

And so we march ever closer to WWIII thanks to the mechanizations and meddling of two administrations into inter-tribal and country affairs that we had no reason to be part of —  all because of greed and holier-than-thou thinking.  When 9/11 happened, we had the right and need as a nation to take care of the issue.   There should have been an understanding that the actions were only specific to the act.  Not meddling in the affairs nor attempting to overthrow governments in areas of the world where we did not belong.

If the UN was actually functioning as it was supposed to be doing (instead of attempting to become THE world governing body) then it should have been the one to reduce or prevent altercations between countries. This should have by all rights been their call.  The United States had no business in this from the beginning.

The very fact that Obama and Clinton rushed arms and funds to the region to unknown groups who have now morphed into ISIS and a dozen other lethally armed terrorist groups without congressional oversight or approval should have had both of them impeached and removed from office even before the murder of our people at Benghazi. By the way, current arms/ammunitions reports cite the US as THE biggest arms dealer in the MidEast period even in 2016.

Obama. Hillary, and Soros have got the blood of thousands and thousands upon their heads and hands by  funding, deliberately calculated inaction, or deliberate misconstruing of the hard facts that were not fitting into their own “alter world” meme.   Neither Obama nor Hillary deserve ANYTHING from our government as retirement pay.  Both deserve nothing less than total condemnation for all of their illegal, illogical, and wimpy acts since 2009.

Soros and Obama deserve prison time along with their pals within that NWO machine in the least amenable cells in the reactivated at Club Alcatraz alongside the Clintons and their criminal machine.  That or lined up in front of a firing squad of full of crack marksmen from all the countries who have had their people killed because of these nut jobs.

Uriel, I agree with what you said. And actually when we attacked the Yemen we attacked Iran. I read an article by a very high up commander who said the Houthi rebels don’t know how to operate these missiles and likely it was Iranian operatives carrying out the attack on us.

You bet WWIII is coming at us like a tiger after its’ prey, fast and ferocious. Due to our involvement brought on by Hillary and Obama, they set into motion one of the most dangerous situations that now exists in the ME.

I agree they need to be arrested and I’d like to see them all in Gitmo. Wouldn’t it fill ya with glee to see Bozo at Gitmo, the very place he wants to shut down so bad. What irony that would be.

All of this is very unsettling. Add the saber rattling regarding Russia. Not good.
