Demons Run

What time? What place? Image from BBC America

When?  Where?  Who?

On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown attacked Police Officer Darren Wilson.  Brown’s life, and criminal career, ended when Officer Wilson defended himself against the charging 6’4” tall, 292 pound, strong armed robber.  However, that was not the end of the story.

One hundred thirty-nine, consider that number for a moment.

139 is the number of law enforcement personnel who have died in the line of duty since that day.

Of that 139, 58 perished as a result of actions taken by criminals against, or in defiance of, law enforcement officers.

50 were outright murdered (44 gunned down, 2 beaten to death, 4 deliberately run over with vehicles).  The other eight died of injuries received while chasing fleeing suspects (7 in vehicle accidents, 1 from a 15-foot fall while in foot pursuit of juvenile car thieves).  (Source: Officer Down Memorial Page)

The numbers cited do not begin to reflect the hundreds injured during that same period as “Hands up, don’t shoot” became the lie of the land.  Open anti-police sentiment and violence have become an everyday occurrence, spurred on by race baiters and anarchists, with tacit consent from the Oval Office and a corrupt Department of Justice.

More than a bullying thug died on that Ferguson, Missouri street.  Civility perished, along with truth, and respect for law.

So, why the TARDIS?  What does all this have to do with a British sci-fi television series?  Whovians will have already recognized the essay title from a poem in the “Doctor Who” episode, A Good Man Goes to War.

Demons run when a good man goes to war
Night will fall and drown the sun
When a good man goes to war

Friendship dies and true love lies
Night will fall and the dark will rise
When a good man goes to war

Demons run, but count the cost
The battle’s won, but the child is lost
When a good man goes to war

To those who would undermine the very fabric of our society, consider this a warning, or prophesy if you prefer.  The decent, law abiding people are at their limit.  Your days are numbered.  Prepare to run when good men and women go to war against you.

In answer to those first questions: When? – Now.  Where? – Here.  Who? – All of us.
