This 5th Grade Singapore Math Problem Has Some Experts Stumped. Can You Solve It?

Singapore logic problem

This problem from the Singapore Math series was posted on Facebook by Singapore TV personality Kenneth Kong. He wrote, “This question causes a debate with my wife …. and its a P5 question.” The Singapore Math curriculum is used by the country of Singapore with enormous success (their students are usually ranked at or near the top in international rankings). P5 is roughly the equivalent of 5th grade math in the U.S., but this question is actually from the recent Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad, which is given to the top 40% of students in the country.

So, are you smarter than a 5th grade Singapore Math Olympiad student?

I’ll post the answer later today after letting everybody stew over it for a while. Heh Heh!

UPDATE: this added Thursday evening, the solution: BTW, I didn’t get it right either …

I’ve seen the answer written out, and I was still scratching my head afterwards. It was more confusing than second semester Calculus.

The biggest problem for me is the wording. Once I figured out what the clues meant, it made sense.

      • Garnet92 says:

I agree Crawfish, particularly the statement where she “tells Albert and Bernard separately the month and day of her birthday respectfully.” That threw me for a bit – it would have been better if she had “told Albert the month and Bernard the day.”

These sort of logic problems have never made sense to me. Even after seeing the problem worked out, I was still scratching my head.

That’s tough! Couldn’t get it without help.

Saw this the other day. Failed miserably. Read the explanation. Since it did not walk through the logic, I still failed miserably.

  6. Hardnox says:

Missed it too. I concluded that Cheryl is a leftist since she speaks in circles and is sneaky.. 🙂

Just check facebook… is probably posted there, along with selfies of people drunk at the party.
