Turkish Women Fight Back

From Honor Diaries

When the story of Ozgecan Aslan came to light, the first reaction was shock. A young woman got on a bus, and was murdered by her would be rapist. Just for fighting back.

The mutilated burned corpse of the 20 year-old psychology student was too horrible to contemplate. How had something like this happened?

But then the shock gave way to anger. Women started to share stories of what had happened to them. Stories ranging from catcalls to molestation, to rape and to the cold indifference of the police. Since Erdogan’s Islamist government took power in 2003, violence against women has skyrocketed.

A new report says that 40% of women suffer domestic violence. Those are just the reported figures. The real ones are doubtless much higher.

Erdogan’s Turkey has been turning a blind eye to the suffering of women, even encouraging it. Erdogan is on record as saying, to an audience of women’s rights activists “I don’t believe in equality between men and women.”

His harsh unyielding Islamism, whilst it claims to favor women, has no time for any woman outside of a subservient conjugal role. But women have been fighting back. Taking to the streets, protesting and demanding that the government listen and take action to combat the epidemic of sexual violence against women.

Turkey is not the only place where women suffer. Across the world women are harassed, raped and abused every day. Patriarchy is not unique to any one country or religion and negatively affects women and girls worldwide.

But with the government not on the side of women, things get so much worse. When police officers and judges are influenced by a sexist understanding of the role of women and blame female victims rather than male perpetrators, cases like the murder of Ozgecan Aslan take place.

It could happen anywhere.

Right now it’s happening in Turkey and women there have made their voices heard in opposing the institutionalized sexism that goes hand in hand with Islamism.

Egypt…. now Turkey….. we are starting to hear more of how women are deciding they have had enough of being treated badly in muslim countries. I believe we will be hearing about other countries also where the women are starting to fight back. Only they can change the ideology of islam.

It takes women to work in this world also. And while I would be delighted to hear MEN can now give birth, as yet that is not available. It is also the female of most species that are the most dangerous especially in defense of hearth and home. Ladies are ONLY victims if they allow men to take them hostage in their own hearts and minds. I myself know this as truth since I also had to overcome .

    Good news there Blessed B!

It’s so easy to get caught off guard and become a hostage….. it has happened to me also. 🙁

I don’t think God intended for one gender to be the master…which is why he made Eve from the side rib of Adam. They were to work together as equals. Somehow and somewhere things got totally messed up! LOL!

I thought it was good news also! 🙂

Iran, July 2009, and Afghanistan, ongoing. Likewise, areas of Pakistan. The women are waking, thanks to widespread communication and access in one manner or another to the outside world.

“I AM WOMAN. HEAR ME ROAR~!” And indeed, the women of the world WILL, and are, in full-voiced roar. The age of the patriarchal oppression is coming to an end. Will that of the Matriarch be any worse??? I have to wonder.

ONLY by an equality of the genders will humankind progress and even survive.

      Yep…the women are waking! LOL!

I sure do hope that the pendulum won’t swing into the other direction and we’ll have a matriarch society….. I don’t think that would solve anything much either. We are to work together, side by side, using both genders to bring about an even keel to all things. Equality of both is what is the answer and needed!
