HERE IT COMES~ The Death of Free Speech!

HERE IT COMES: FEC Discussing Plans to Block Political Speech Published via YouTube, Blogs, Drudge Report, etc.

The federal government, taking pages from the playbooks of Communist nations like China, is preparing regulations that will have profound impacts on free speech online. If the regulations succeed via the Federal Elections Committee, any posts, videos or news stories posted in support or opposition of a candidate will be considered a political contribution. The FEC closely regulates contribution limits, meaning that blogs and Youtubers would have their free speech capped once their content value surpasses the spending limit. In other words, your posts, comments or videos supporting or opposing a candidate will be treated like donations or campaign independent expenditures.

CNS News has more.

The commission, which consists of three Republican and three Democratic members, last considered such regulations in 2005. However, intense opposition from First Amendment groups resulted in rules that were limited to paid advertisements from political campaigns, parties, and PACs.

This time around, organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation have warned that some Democrats on the commission would like to impose much more burdensome regulations that could serve as the equivalent of spending caps in restricting political speech.

Last October, FEC Chairwoman Ann Ravel issued a statement in which she complained that the agency was not doing enough to monitor activity on the Internet.

“Some of my colleagues seem to believe that the same political message that would require disclosure if run on television should be categorically exempt from the same requirements when placed on the Internet alone. As a matter of policy, this simply does not make sense,” Ravel said.

At what point would free speech be cut off if these regulations took hold?

Before the decision, individuals were limited to a combined total of $46,200 in contributions to all federal candidates, and $70,800 to federal political action committees and parties.

Individuals are no longer restricted by aggregate limits, which Chief Justice John Roberts said “intrude without justification on a citizen’s ability to exercise ‘the most fundamental First Amendment activities’.”

They may now “contribute up to $2,600 per election to a federal candidate, $10,000 per calendar year to a state party committee, $32,400 per calendar year to a national party committee, and $5,000 per calendar year to a PAC [political action committee],” according to the FEC.

First of all, I fail to see how the FEC can actually monitor and tally all speech online. Second, this could not be a more clear cut violation of the 1st Amendment. It would be like saying you can only knock X numbers of doors as a volunteer support a candidate in your neighborhood because of contribution limits.

What say you?

So….. how do they then calculate how much one blog has contributed to any one candidate or political party? How are they going to monitor all of the blogs that post stories about politicians or political parties?

To me…this is just more stupidity from the PSP’s!

Sounds crazy but I wouldn’t put anything past the Left. They sincerely believe that free speech is their right alone.

  2. Kathy says:

Agreed, BB, there’s just no way they could possibly monitor all the websites that exist, not to mention how fast new ones would pop up to replace the ones they shut down.

  3. Clyde says:

While I would not put it past the asshats, this sounds like a trial balloon. Time for We, The People, to make THAT balloon look like a Swiss cheese. Good post, B.

  4. I.R. Wayright says:

They are probably already posting want ads for thousands of Net Nannies at GS-9 levels of compensation. Then they could brag about all the new jobs they created.

  5. Hardnox says:

The left can dream on all they want. They’d never be able to enforce it. Of course the left would be exempt.

It’s insane that anyone could even think of such a law in the first place.

These guys are just trying to cut off any support to people that are not Democrats. I don’t see how FEC can do what the Supreme Court ruled illegal by FCC and Obama but I am sure they will try.
