Trey Gowdy’s had it with Benghazi committee Dems and here’s why …

Trey Gowdy, Elijah CummingsA bitter partisan battle is developing among members of the House committee investigating the 2012 Benghazi attack chaired by Rep. Trey Gowdy and Democrats bent on limiting access to witnesses.

And a potential clash between Gowdy and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is waiting in the wings.

The Democratic members, headed by Maryland’s Elijah Cummings, seek veto power over the committee’s subpoenas and object to Gowdy’s examination of witnesses by only the GOP members.

The Democrats would rather debate the matter than hear what the witnesses have to say.

Gowdy, a former South Carolina prosecutor, knows that giving Democrats veto power over issuing subpoenas would mean no witnesses would be called at all.

“I am unwilling to let the minority party veto subpoenas when it is clear they have prejudged the outcome of the investigation,” Gowdy said, according to the Washington Examiner.

“The minority has repeatedly indicated it is unwilling to issue any subpoenas. If subpoenas are necessary for the committee to talk to relevant witnesses or access relevant documents, they will be issued.”

Gowdy is having none of it.

“But I will not allow the minority’s political games and unreasonable demands to interfere with the investigation,” he said. “The time for negotiations has passed, and the committee is moving on under the rules and scope approved by Congress.”

The most compelling witness would be Hillary Clinton, the secretary of state when the U.S. foreign mission in Benghazi was overrun by Islamic militants on Sept. 11, 2012.

Although she has testified on two previous occasions — once in each chamber of Congress — she indicated a willingness to appear before the special select committee, according to Cummings, who claimed he’d broached the subject to her last year.

“She immediately said she would do that and she wanted to come in December and then she said, ‘Well, if you can’t have me in December I’ll come in January.’ She said … ‘I’ll do it, period,’” Cummings said, according to CNN.

Gowdy has long expressed a desire to hear from Clinton, but not until the panel has had a chance to subpoena and review all relevant State Department documentation, including emails to and from Clinton and her own notes.

In June of last year, Clinton indicated to NBC News that she had taken numerous notes during the attack, but declined to say whether she’d be open to handing them over to the committee.

Gowdy’s position is that it’d be fruitless to have her testify before the panel has reviewed the documentation.

“We intend to access all of the information necessary to do the job the House instructed us to do,” Gowdy said in his opening statement at a committee meeting on Tuesday. “And we need to access that information now. Talking to only some of the witnesses will not work. Accessing only some of the documents will not work.

“If you want all of the truth, you need all of the information.”

This is reassuring news. It gives us hope that Gowdy will follow through and issue subpoenas whether the democrat members like it or not. He knew going in that the dems only reason for joining the committee was to get inside information on what he was planning and to derail whatever actions might pose a problem for the administration (Hillary included). Cummings is a master of throwing up roadblocks and skewing the direction of any Republican-led group of which he is a member – that’s his charter – his reason for being there.  It was inevitable that Gowdy and Cummings would butt heads, the issuance of subpoenas will be evidence of who won. Party on, Trey!

Cummings is nothing more than a water carrier for the administration and a party hack. He’s an embarrassment to any thinking person. Pelosi pushed him into that committee.

It appears that Gowdy will now ratchet up his efforts. Good on him. Further, Gowdy knew that the D’s would provide a log jamb. He’s going through the paces so as to provide legitimacy of process.

You have to wonder if this wasn’t Gowdy’s strategy all along. Let the dem obstructionists display their obvious attempts to derail the investigation thereby justifying any and all otherwise “extreme” measures Gowdy may now take in pursuit of the truth.

I’d like to think that he thought that far ahead and was prepared for their antics, we’ll see.

Cummings is nothing more than a bodyguard, an enforcer. His job is to divert any progress that might lead to the 1) embarrassment to the administration, and 2) the prison time that could ensue from evidence of wrongdoing. He is a walking, talking roadblock, nothing more.

Gowdy amazes me. Even though 15 of his Investigators were murdered…he is going for it anyway!

Nov 14, 2014 – Trey Gowdy was wrapping up an interview with Megyn Kelly on The … BEFORE Trey Gowdy’s Select committee was formed concerning Benghazi, FIFTEEN of the people who were speaking to congressional investigators were murdered! … claim is that someone is having Benghazi investigators murdered, …

If any of you watched the hearing that was broadcast last week, you saw Cummings repeat much of what Gowdy said, in efforts to ‘be clear’. At first I thought he was a dolt, but then I realized he’s just stalling. His repeating and reshaping of Gowdy’s words made the hearing last twice as long as it should have, wasting time and most of the morning.

Kudos to Gowdy for stepping up the pace and for staying on track, and kudos to you Garnet and to all the contributors here who are helping to keep this up front. The Dems want this to go away and we can’t let that happen. Especially when the main culprit wants to be the next president.

Delay, diffuse, divert – all part of the dem’s game plan, and why not? It’s worked for all of the previous “investigations” hasn’t it? But this time the rules are different, there are no artificial time limitations on a questioner, he has a Republican majority on the committee, and he has subpoena powers – assuming that he will use them.

I think that Gowdy is wise to put off questioning Hillary until he has evidence with which he can skewer her. Doing so before he has the facts, prevents him from doing what he does best – ask leading questions (all rhetorical since he already knows the answer) and challenge the witness to arrive at a conclusion other than the one he is presenting (that someone did something illegal).

He probably has a pretty good idea of what happened, when, and why, and is just biding his time until he has enough ammunition to drop the bomb on Hillary, Obama, et al. Of course, the dems know that too, so it’s to their advantage to get her before the committee before Gowdy is fully prepared. They also want this thing over soon so there is more time to forget Hillary’s screw-ups before the 2016 election.

Watching this closely. i hope and pray Gowdy persists.

This is Gowdy’s Super Bowl. If he wins (proving wrong-doing by Hillary, Obama, or some other top administration officials), he’ll be a rock star for the 2020 elections. If he isn’t able to prove (to any reasonable person’s satisfaction) any wrong-doing, he’ll just become another flash-in-the-pan. Most of us conservatives believe in him and think that he has the mettle to expose the downright un-American activities that have become common for the democrat administrations – but especially Obama’s.

  4. CW says:

I imagine Mr. Gowdy’s frustration must be at a boiling point by now. Working with lying, conniving democrats at this level has to be far more challenging than it was as a state district attorney. It’s almost impossible to hold people accountable here. Obama’s boy Eric Holder is running the justice department. The media is largely controlled by the Left, so they won’t report the obstruction that’s taking place. And the American public? Most of them don’t get it and don’t care. The dems know that all they have to do is stall and stall some more.

    • CW says:

Welcome to what justice looks like when the Left has anything to say about it.

      • Garnet92 says:

All too true, CW. It’s just another reason that the Senate shouldn’t be too quick to confirm Lynch. She’s is just another Eric Holder with different genitals. We who want the truth to come out and for those who have committed crimes to be punished are in a minority, as you say, we’re battling against the left, the media, and the LIV’s – a formidable adversary.

  5. Clyde says:

Good post. No question Gowdy knows exactly WHO, and, more importantly, WHAT he’s dealing with. MHO, the democrats have found one of the FEW republicans they cannot shut up, nor shut down. God knows they’ve tried.

  6. Grouchy says:

How sad is it, that boehner doesn’t have the courage and fortitude that Gowdy has~!
Does ANYone remember when the IRS scandal broke, that Boehner said “someone is going to pay for this, and I don’t mean their job, I mean JAIL~!”,,,
All hot air and prune juice,,, and it’s the middle the winter, here now~!
    GO, Trey Gowdy, GO~!~!
