Germany: Anti-Muslim Rallies Damage Our Image

From AFP:

Germany Far Right

Thousands of people joined a march by the German anti-Islamisation PEGIDA movement on Sunday, the group’s first rally since threats surfaced against the group and its leader resigned over “Hitler” photos. The new demonstration in Dresden came after Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier voiced concern that the group’s anti-Muslim sentiments were harming Germany’s image.

Police estimated that 17,000 people had turned up for the rally. Many carried signs saying “They don’t do anything, they move here and they deal”, “For a sovereign country”, “Honest people, get up at last” and “Thank you Pegida”. There were also chants of “We are the people”, a reference to the spontaneous movements that preceded the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Sunday’s rally was the first since PEGIDA’s founder and leader Lutz Bachmann stepped down on January 21 after a photo of him with a Hitler-style haircut and moustache appeared on Facebook, along with racist slurs.

It was also the first since a rally was cancelled in Dresden after threats were made against Bachmann and other leaders of the self-styled “Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the Occident”.

PEGIDA marches — which have voiced anger against Islam and “criminal asylum seekers” — began with several hundred supporters in October and have since steadily grown, drawing a record 25,000 people on January 12 just after the Paris Islamist attacks.

“We are not against Muslims who want to work in Germany, we are not neo-Nazis. But those who want to live in Germany should adapt to the reality of the country,” 57-year-old Gabriele Schoenherr told AFP at the rally.

Steinmeier said Germany underestimates the damage caused by “PEGIDA’s xenophobic and racist slogans and placards”.  International scrutiny makes “it all the more important that we say clearly and strongly that PEGIDA does not speak in Germany’s name,” he said in an interview with daily newspaper Bild.

He also said that mobilising crowds with attacks on scapegoats like immigrants and asylum seekers was “easier than by raising complex subjects like insufficient infrastructure or the aging of the population.”

The movement has also prompted anti-PEGIDA protests in Germany. On Saturday, Aiman Mazyek, chairman of the Central Council of Muslims, condemned the increasing Islamaphobic attacks in Germany, including “insults” against veiled women, mosques “vandalised” and violence against imam.

Steinmeier isn’t listening to their message and if he weren’t a liberal like Angela Merkel, who vows to rally for tolerance, he’d realize the people aren’t concerned about the infrastructure or the age of the people. Like citizens in many countries, they’re concerned about their country being overrun with muslims.

When do people wake up and realize the muslims don’t intend to assimilate? No other nationality or group of people have ever immigrated to another country and demanded compliance to their customs and religion except these people.

For the Germans to be more concerned about their image than their people is another example of misplaced priorities. What does it say for your country’s image to be overrun with muslims and your residents are terrified and angry? That can’t be good for business or tourism.

Steinmeier is wrong – PEGIDA does speak for Germany, but like here in the US, the government doesn’t.

What is “harming Germany’s image ” is the same as what is harming America’s image : Gutless leaders and muzzie sympathizers that kow-tow to the murderous barbarians. Can anybody tell me WHY ?

Hey PEGIDA, wouldn’t you like to come visit us here in the good ol’ USA ? We could use a few more people with brains enough to see the devastation that is ahead if these animals aren’t stopped.

  2. Clyde says:

I guess what Steimmeier cannot see is the similarities to Islam and Germany’s past. Not sure WHICH is worse.

One of the German problems is dealing with the easily recalled image of the NSDAP. It’s so easy for anyone who wants to blacken Germans to recall the Nazi days – far easier than the left’s continued use of slavery in the US. And the German leaders – all of them – are terrified of being called Nazis in the press.

One thing that is going to have to happen, VM, is that we all develop a hide like an elephant, allegorically speaking, and realize that what is past is past, and today is the beginning of a future that we’re setting the foundation for.
Nazism was defeated, along with fascism, in WW 2. The German People tore down the Berlin Wall in 1989. Germany became a jewel of a Sovereign Nation, as a result. Now, the islamic horde wants to destroy that. And the German ruling aristocracy is too much in the mold of Neville Chamberlain to prevent it.
      I Grieve.

    • Kathy says:

What they’re doing VM, is bending over so far backward that they’re allowing the muslims to be the next Nazis, instead of protecting and standing up for their people.

    Awesome commentary, Kathy.
So, hardworking, diligent and caring Germans are harming the image of the country, but slothful suckers of the public teat, rapists and jihadis are NOT harming the Germanic image???
    Hmmm,,,
Being 1/4 German heritage myself, this indeed bothers me~!

    • Kathy says:

Thanks, Grouchy. That statement about their image is about as asinine and it gets. It couldn’t be more obvious that image is not important to the citizens, and it’s certainly not important to the muslims.

Agreed Kathy that Steinmeier is wrong. That only highlights the skewed view of events that the left has – they refuse to see events for what they are because the real causes don’t fit their agenda. Odumfuzz does the same thing – just look at his interpretation of the 2014 mid-term elections – from his slant, the results were good for his programs – hah!

  6. CW says:

The problem with the “tolerance” crowd is that they are always asking the wrong people to be tolerant. Furthermore, there isn’t a liberal alive who knows what tolerance really means. Tolerance, to a liberal, is when you sacrifice all of your own values to impress someone who would just as soon kill you as look at you. “Tolerance,” a al liberalism, is what got Europe into this mess. The time for tolerance is past.

If you’ll notice the picture of the protestors, there are young, there are older, there is a man in what looks like white shirt and tie, as well as those in jeans. All in cold weather gear, no one screaming with angry faces. Just a quite march/protest.
Looks a little like the tea party.

Germans are hard working people. They are waking up to the Muslim menace in their country and it’s growing. God’s speed, PEGIDA.

Thank’s Kathy. You’re always on top of the issues of today. And you’re accurate.
