Some conservatives expressed outrage that Obama shook hands with Cuban dictator Raul Castro before the memorial service for Nelson Mandela. They are misguided in characterizing that simple act of civility as a formal recognition of, or at least giving legitimacy to, the oppressive Castro regime.
As a White House official said, “Above all else, today is about honoring Nelson Mandela, and that was the President’s singular focus at the memorial service.”
Well, maybe not so much.
