Greenpeace Waging War Against Life-Saving ‘Golden Rice.

by     William Bigelow      14 Oct 2013, 9:28 AM PDT

Seems to be their NEW mission.

The environmentalist group Greenpeace is waging war against the production of Golden Rice, a genetically modified rice that could save more than half a million children around the world from disease and 250,000 from dying each year.

Dr. Patrick Moore, one of the original founders of Greenpeace, condemned Greenpeace in The Globe and Mail. He wrote that Golden Rice, created by Dr. Ingo Potrykus and Prof. Peter Beyer, has been maligned with misinformation and even had the field trials of its product at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines threatened with violent destruction.

Moore writes that two million people, mostly young children, die from a vitamin A deficiency every year, most of whom eat one cup of rice each day. The rice has no beta carotene, leading to a vitamin A deficiency, leaving them vulnerable to blindness and weakness in their immune systems.

Greenpeace, according to Moore, has three objections to Golden Rice:

  1. They say there may be “unforeseen” consequences for human health and the environment. But there is no evidence to support that accusation; the only distinction between Golden Rice and conventional rice is that Golden Rice has beta carotene added to it. Greenpeace claims that Golden Rice could crossbreed with other rice plants; yet the only effect of interbreeding would be to have conventional rice gain beta carotene. As Moore writes, “…to suggest that the threat of rice interbreeding is more important than two million deaths every year is pathetic.”
  2. Greenpeace wants the children to eat leafy vegetables and consume vitamin A pills instead of eating Golden Rice. Two problems: the children cannot afford pills and there is no room to grow the vegetables.
  3. Greenpeace claims that Golden Rice cannot effectively transmit vitamin A. But scientists at Tufts University and the Zhejiang Academy of Medical Sciences in China have proven that it can. The results were published in 2012 in the peer-reviewed American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Moore concludes:

The real reason Greenpeace is opposed to Golden Rice is because it is genetically modified and they can’t seem to imagine that even one beneficial crop might result from this technique. They are willing to put their zero-tolerance ideology ahead of a critical humanitarian mission. Every major science and health organization supports Golden Rice.

Moore wrote, “I left [Greenpeace] because they had drifted from a humanitarian effort to save civilization from all-out nuclear war to an organization that sees humans as the enemies of the earth.”

Well, Dr. Moore, better you leave the communistic front group sooner than never.

And here we thought it was only CONSERVATIVES who wanted to “starve children” . Just ask ANY leftist. To think, there is a food crop with PROVEN benefits FOR THE CHILDREN, and THIS bunch of moonbats want it DESTROYED.

Are there ANY environmental groups that haven’t gone completely off the deep end? It seems the communists have won these groups over along with the democrat party, most of academe, students, et al.

If a Greenpeacer, or any other moonbat starts railing about “starving children”, hit them over the head with THIS article.

Preferably wrapped around a lead pipe. Remember, you’re doing it “for the children”.

I hereby challenge Greenpeace to prove their commitment to saving Mother Earth from the destruction caused by us dumb-assed humans by eliminating (reportedly) 2.8 million earth-killers by committing mass suicide (obviously, in an earth-friendly, non-polluting way).

Wow! If they really did that, I would be so impressed that they were REALLY honest about their beliefs.

    “Unforseen consequences..”
If everyone cowed to “unforseen consequences”
Columbus would’ve remained a Mediterranean sailor
Johnathan Salk would’ve been just another doctor.
There would be no footprints on the moon.

  3. Mrs AL says:

There you go. The Green Pieces of ____ are powerful — WHY? What led to their ascension to power? What is the real agenda behind this nasty, ugly organization today? I bet you dimes to donuts most would be shocked.

    • Clyde says:

The REAL agenda is simple, Mrs. Al. The elimination of capitalism, and a “one-world-government” run by THEM. The environmental movement has become home to nothing more than the communist party. Good question, Mrs. Al. Thanks.

  4. Kathy says:

Good grief. Don’t these idiots have anything better to do than whine about rice? It’s more important to them to be right, than it is to save lives??? Maybe they’re part of Bill Gates population control club.

  5. Hardnox says:

This reminds me of that whole DDT sham whereas later it was admitted that it did not impose harmful pathogens into the environment BUT the cessation of its use resulted in millions dying of malaria as a consequence.

The insanity of leftists knows no limits. I’m with Garnet., they should off themselves and demonstrate by good example.

  6. I am not in favor of GMO’s as a whole, but this article is a bit different, as I don’t think that honeybees have a part in the life cycle of rice. I could be as wet as a rice paddy, so, don’t take my word for it. Still, there are a lot of problems with GMO’s, and each case has to be evaluated on its own merits. And from what I read here, Golden Rice has a LOT more potential for good than harm.
I brushed off Greenpeace, when they became so militant about the whaling – Another case of good intentions gone sadly and badly executed.

I am going to disagree with you here, GF. IF there were NO such things as “genetically modified organisms”, our crops would almost SURELY fail. After all, what is meant by HYBRID when it comes to such staples as corn, wheat, or any other food crop? By developing these things, it ensures us of healthier, better yielding crops of most anything.
