Nation’s Only Unionized Strip Club Closes on Labor Day

Strippers. With “The Union Label”, no less.

The nation’s only unionized strip club closed its doors on Monday, the national holiday celebrating labor unions.

The Lusty Lady, a San Francisco institution for almost 40 years, was behind on rent and struggling to keep pace with competitors. For the past decade, it had operated as a workers’ cooperative.

The club was unionized by SEIU in 1997. In 2003, the dancers joined together and purchased the Lusty Lady for $400,000 in 2003. A former dancer recalled her time there fondly, but noted that “the pay was quite low by industry standards—typically from the low-teens to low-twenties per hour.”

The former dancer also observed:

For all its positive attributes, the Lusty hardly wanted for shortcomings. For starters, it was—and I say this affectionately—a dump. The endlessly cheerful support staff made sure that the stage and Private Pleasures booth were tidy, and the dressing room as neat as could be, but the public areas resembled a dimly lit Dionysian hellscape in which one could almost hear the carpet squish.

One of the positive attributes the dancer recalled was that the club had very strict rules on its customers. They weren’t allowed to make special dance requests, for example. The dancer found this empowering. Other observers might note that it is also uncompetitive, however. A customer has choices on where to spend money, after all. It seems too many of the Lusty Lady’s customers made that choice.

A bold experiment in the history of labor unions has ended. Also, a previously unanswered question has been settled. Unions can drive even a strip club out of business.

In my 60 years on this God’s green Earth, I would have NEVER believed a strip club would have been a bastion of unionism.

A “cooperative” of peelers couldn’t make a strip joint work in the REAL world? Gee, I wonder WHY ?  Only in San Freaksicko would there be a “co-operative” of sex trade workers.

I can just picture this: Horny Joe walks into the joint, after a long hard day of panhandling in the Haight-Ashbury District, he wants to see some “boobs and butts”, she comes out, dancing and a’ prancing, and gets down to the good stuff. Horny Joe, and his “little partner” are REALLY excited, and she walks off the stage, so as not to be late for her union-authorized, mandatory COFFEE BREAK. Horny Joe left to wonder : WHAT the HELL???

Out comes the NEXT act, she’s getting real naughty with Horny Joe, just as she’s about to give him a lap dance, POOF, away she goes. For, you guessed it, her mandatory “diversity tolerance” training session. Paid for, of course, by the club.

Now ol’ Horny Joe here has about had it. Next girl comes out, she gets down to nothing but a G-string, and sticking the money-maker in Horny Joe’s unshaven face, and all of a sudden, she gets REALLY pissed off, and runs backstage, coming out with, yep, you got it, a PICKET SIGN. Seems as if the management has been shortchanging them on their “tips”. And, making them WORK.

Not to mention an increase in union dues, and co-payment on their formerly fully funded healthcare and pension plans. Which, when ol’ Gypsy Rose goes to collect her retirement, she’s told there is NOTHING there, because she didn’t get a withdrawal card when she quit peeling at age 65. Even though the club had been paying the required “contributions” all along. She was told that HER monies went to make sure Obama was re-elected, and that HE would “take care” of her.

By now, you MUST be wondering: What happened to good ol’ Horny Joe?  He went down the street, to the NON-UNION club, where his “needs” were met by girls WANTING to do their jobs, for TWICE the money the girls at “The Lucky Lady” were making. Along with the REST of the “Horny Joes” out there. Ahhhh, yes, the FREE MARKET, at work. Even in the seediest of businesses.

This LAST sentence sums it up as good as can be.  ” Unions can drive even a strip club out of business.”    Now THAT takes some REAL talent.

The irony of this is too funny. Figures that the club was in San Francisco.

I can’t help but wonder if any of those man’s clubs in Chicago are union?

    Funny story, Clyde.

Let’s see, a strip club catering to straight men in San Francisco run by a unionized workers’ co-op consisting of aging strippers. How many things are wrong with THAT business model? I’m surprised it didn’t fold a lot sooner.

Nothing is more satisfying than a story about liberals getting schooled by real-life experience.

    • Clyde says:

Thanks, CW. Glad you liked it. That whole story illustrates liberal thought processes to a T.

I love the comment about the business model on which the club was based.

It was probably some consultant from Haaavard;s Business School advising them and writing their business plan. With that “success story” in his resume, he’ll go on to bigger and better things as an Obama financial advisor.

Good one, Clyde. I was thinking the same thing before I read your last line – unions can even screw up a strip joint. That just tells you how worthless they are.

    Okay, let’s try it again….

Thanks, Terry. Your comment, however, damn near needed an EYE-BLEACH alert !!!
